eliminating backlogs
One of the biggest problems facing the criminal justice system is the substantial backlog of unanalyzed DNA samples and biological evidence from crime scenes, especially in sexual assault and murder cases. For example, in 1995, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement linked evidence found on a rape-homicide victim to a convicted rapist’s DNA profile just eight days before he was scheduled for parole. The suspect have been released prior to being linked to the unsolved rape/homicide, and therefore he might have raped or murder again. Thus, the analysis of CODIS of DNA profiles can enhance the chances that crime victims will be spared the violence of offenders.
Strengthening Crime Laboratory Capacity
The crime laboratories do not have the capacity to analyze DNA samples in a timely fashion, indeed, many have limited equipment resources, outdated info and overwhelming case management demands. As a result, the criminal justice system as a whole is unable to take full advantage of the full benefits of DNA technology. Therefore, improving lab capacity can prevent future DNA backlogs and help the criminal system realize the full potential of DNA tech.
Funding FBI Forensic Analysis Programs
The FBI Forensic analysis Programs consist of PCR and MtDNA which are two efficient ways to analyze samples from a crime scene. therefore, funding the FBI expands labs and technological techniques. As a result, better and more reliable results can be obtained
Research and Development
Stimulating research and developing method of analyzing DNA samples is very important in order to advance the cause of justice.
